The Aquanaut series was released in 1997 as a more budget-friendly alternative (relatively speaking, of course). When it launched, the Aquanaut created a sensation. It was young, modern, and unexpected. Its case was a rounded octagon, inspired by that of the Nautilus. And it sported a “Tropical” strap, made of a new composite material ultra-resistant to wear, salt water, and UV radiation. A perfect sports watch. This is by far the most informal model offered by Patek, we've seen demand send this model to the moon.
You either love it or you hate it. One thing for sure is that we never expected Patek Philippe to come out with a colorful Aquanaut in men's size. We are accustomed to seeing this brand's models as very traditional. Lots of blacks and browns with timeless conservative styling. It is safe to say that Patek has finally caved in a bit and is starting to roll out some more interesting and fun color options. Starting with the 5168 20th anniversary model in blue then following with this "khaki" green version and the knock-out red Singapore edition. Besides the colors what makes them special is the limited availability. As hard as it is to get a standard Patek 5167 today, one can only imagine how hard it will be to get your hands on one of these. My favorite thing about the 5168 is the size. The case has been upgraded to a 42mm size case and has a perfect fit considering that nowadays watch sizes are trimming down. I feel that this watch is not for the first-time Patek Philippe buyer but more for the collector that wants to have an accenting model in his lineup. I can't say it enough, I LOVE IT!
